Neue PublikationFilosofo e rabbino nella Venezia del Seicento – Studi su Simone Luzzatto con documenti inediti dall’Archivio di Stato di Venezia.
19 November 2015
This is the first collection of essays exploring the thought of Simone Luzzatto (1583?-1663) in its multifaceted dimensions, with a special focus on its sceptical philosophical background and implications.
Together with the announced translations of the Discorso circa il stato degli Hebrei (Venice, 1638) and of the Socrate overo dell’humano sapere (Venice, 1651), this publication is particularly important for the Maimonides Centre’s exploration into Jewish scepticism. The idea that it is possible to investigate a field otherwise neglected and underestimated was born from these works.
Luzzatto was a Rabbi and a philosopher, a sharp political theorist who asserted and vindicated the utility and the essential contribution of the Jews to the Venetian economy while simultaneously espousing a sceptical philosophical approach, which has an external appearance of fideism. He also displays his intellectual acuteness in his legal responsa.
The volume also includes new documentary evidence from the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, which shed new light on the life of Simone Luzzatto, his family, and their personal and business connections in the Venetian Ghetto.
