We would like to invite you to a Maimonides Lecture on Scepticism on Monday, 16 December 2024, at 18:00. Daniel Boyarin (University of California at Berkeley) will talk about “The Rambam Connection; or, How Maimonides Brought Al-Fārābī to the Talmud.”
The Rambam Connection; or, How Maimonides Brought Al-Fārābī to the Talmud
In this lecture, I will argue that the distinctive linguistic philosophy that underlines talmudic interpretation in the fifteenth through seven teenth centuries, first in Sepharad and then in Ashkenaz, developed under the influence of Maimonides’s treatise The Words of Logic. I will further claim that this Maimonidean work is entirely a product of Maimonides’s encounter with Al-Fārābī’s philosophy of language. Farabian thought is thus seen to be the father of talmudic interpretation in early modern Jewry, with Maimonides as the conduit.
Daniel Boyarin is Hermann P. and Sophia Taubman Emeritus Professor of Talmudic Culture at the University of California at Berkeley.
